About Downsized Designs
The Name Is Literal.
In early 2020, after a career in corporate finance — VP of Finance, CPA, the whole ladder — Steve Cheslock was downsized. Weeks later, COVID shut the rest of the world down too. So he went to the garage, fired up a laser, and started making things people could hold onto. The name isn't a slogan. It's what happened.
From a Garage to a Workshop
Downsized Designs is now a full workshop in Carmel, Indiana, running seven lasers. Every piece is designed here, cut here, engraved here, and hand-finished here — then made fresh for the person who ordered it. Nothing sits on a shelf waiting for a buyer.
What We Make
Our personalized 2-layer Christmas ornaments are the heart of the shop — more than 1,100 designs, from dog breeds to occupations to the sports your kid plays, each one engraved with a name or a date. They sell all year, not just in December.
Beyond the ornaments: Colossal indoor plant trellises that turn a houseplant into furniture, layered wood wall art and decorative panels, signs and magnets with opinions, and custom corporate work — logo ornaments and engraved frames for companies that want gifts people actually keep.
How We Work
Everything is made to order, typically in 5–7 business days. Wood, stain, and paint are chosen per piece — most designs come in up to 12 finishes — and if it isn't right, we hear about it and we fix it. That's how a garage project turned into more than 36,000 sales on Etsy with a 4.8-star average: one order at a time, made by the people whose name is on the door.
